Rating: 5/5

Summary: Veronica doesn’t think she’s going crazy. But why can’t anyone else see the mysterious blond boy who keeps popping up wherever she goes? When her best friend, Mackenna, invites her to spend the summer in Scotland, Veronica jumps at the opportunity to leave her complicated life behind for a few months. But the Scottish countryside holds other plans. Not only has the imaginary kilted boy followed her to Alloway, she and Mackenna uncover a strange set of rings and a very unnerving letter from Mackenna’s great aunt—and when the girls test the instructions Aunt Gracie left behind, they find themselves transported to a land that defies explanation. Doon seems like a real-life fairy tale, complete with one prince who has eyes for Mackenna and another who looks suspiciously like the boy from Veronica’s daydreams. But Doon has a dark underbelly as well. The two girls could have everything they’ve longed for…or they could end up breaking an enchantment and find themselves trapped in a world that has become a nightmare.

My Thoughts:

I loved this book for it had more elements then I first thought. It’s not only a time traveling, romance but it also has friendship and a good mystery to it. Plus each Mackenna and Veronica each had their own story within the 368 pages. Making it a duel POV which I was not expecting when I first picked it up.

Element Wise:

Time traveling: The girls go from staying in a cottage to going on a bridge to the magic place called Doon. Which makes this a loose interruption to musical Brigadoon (which I know nothing about but kind a want to).

Friendship- This is a big part of the book for Mackenna and Veronica have one of my favorite friendships I’ve ever read. They were always there for each other, and picked up each other’s spirits when needed. Also to see how close the people of Doon are to one another and how the royal family treated their people. I just loved that world a lot.

Mystery: Okay after the girls arrive in Doon weird things start to happen which makes the town people not trust them. So through the whole book you wonder the how’s and why’s and if the girls are safe in or out the castle walls.

Romance: I really liked it for it wasn’t really there. It had to do with something called the ‘calling’ which leads two people together by dreams and visions of the other person. It was interesting that Veronica had her relationship Jamie and then Mackenna had Duncan. Each relationship was different in the ups and downs that happened. Some girls dreams about getting a prince and each girl has their own plus as bonus brothers.

Mackenna/Duncan-Truth be told that Mackenna didn’t want nothing to do with Duncan. While Duncan kept trying to win her over with his quick wit and charming smile. I LOVE them together and how the book ended with them broke my heart.

Veronica/Jamie– Veronica had to work hard to get Jamie’s attention since he acted Veronica didn’t exist. It was hard to read how up and down Jamie was toward her even after the explanation. To me why didn’t he say something earlier instead of leading her on then giving the cold shoulder?

Another cute couple would have to be the Fergus and Fiona. They both grew up together and each work in the castle. Fergus is very clear about his feelings while Fiona is more subtle. They were side characters that’s I totally feel in love with and want to see more as I continue the series.

The Top Secret Villain:

I can’t say that much about the villain in these book because that’s a spoiler to those who haven’t read this book. However was can be said is that it’s a witch who would really love to take over Doon. I don’t know if it was obvious to others who the witch was, but I did get surprised and really liked that twist.

That Ending Though: Was sad and made me happy at the same time. For there was a split that I didn’t see and now I want to read the next book to see where it goes from there.

So if you haven’t figured I love this book and really need to continue hopefully before the last book comes out later this year. So if you like time traveling with a great friendship, and a good mystery. Then please read this.
