Audible Review: Career of Evil

Author: Robert Galbraith

Series: Cormoran Strike-3

Rating: 4.5/5

Summary: When a mysterious package is delivered to Robin Ellacott, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman’s severed leg.

Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but no less alarmed. There are four people from his past who he thinks could be responsible – and Strike knows that any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality.

With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike is increasingly sure is not the perpetrator, he and Robin take matters into their own hands, and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. But as more horrendous acts occur, time is running out for the two of them…

MY THOUGHTS:

.05 is totally Mathew all the way. Other than that this is the best one so far for the spooky factor, how its told in the killer POV, and the emotionally damage it did to me.
Like how about that last line WTF its not just what Robin said but the actions behind the words that make me just losing my mind. Also my dislike for Mathew has grown from dislike to hatred really fast which each book he’s in. I mean come on we got rid of Charlotte pretty fast now why cant we just not have Mathew in the picture anymore.

My feelings for Robin in these book are up and down. I love when she stood up to Strike about letting her keep working at the office, or stood up to an attack, or come contract with cut off body parts. Yet she caves to Mathew all the time. I get the loyalty to a point but in these book you see how freaking unfit he is for her. That is like the only thing I don’t like about Robin’s character.

Strike is still the same though he’s way more stressed in these book, because these killings are personally. Its hitting on his past and ruining his business which makes Strike a unhappy man. Which doesn’t help him solve the case any quicker.

This case is more creepy than the two before which is credited putting the killers POV in. That first chapter creeped me out so much and it just got crazier from there. It was a jack the ripper type storyline that again I didn’t know who the killer was until the end.

This book had my raging and self ranting at a all time high which made me love/hate it. I don’t believe I have to wait until 2017 for the next book. To know what the heck happened and probably get kicked in the gut again. THIS IS WHY I DON’T READ INCOMPLETE SERIES THE WAIT IS GOING TO SUCK.

Okay done with that for now but gosh I have the self rants right now thanks to the a fact that no one I knows read these series. Now I need to try and find a new book to read which should be a fun process.

Audible Review: Coraline

Author: Neil Gaiman

Genre: YA/Fantasy

Format: audible by overdrive

Length: 3hrs/36mins

Rating: 3.5/5

Had to watch the movie after finishing the book to see how different things actual where. Come to find out not much was that different to me. Coraline is still an explore who found a hidden passageway that leads to a place where she isn’t ignored by her parents or neighbors getting her name wrong. This new world that looked like her home but with more magic and saractic talking cat. Coraline soon finds out however that this wasn’t as prefect as she was made to believe.

However there are some differences..
Like Wybie isn’t in the book.
Plus the dolls never was a thing.
The wonderments all but one is the same.
Plus the ending was a little different and am okay with it.

Also the reason I give it such a middle rating is because I’ve seen the movie enough times to know what was happening. If I read the book before the movie ever came out it would probably be different. But as it stands I did enjoy reading the book of the story I’ve already seen.

Other than that I also enjoyed the audio book of these because it was narrated by Neil Gaiman. Also it was short and creepy especially since it had voices saying rhymes. This is a good Halloween book that am glad I got to it this year. Plus these is officially my first Neil Gaiman and will be reading some other of his work.

AUDIBLE REVIEW: The Silkworm

Author: Robert Galbraith

Series: Cormoran Strike-2

Narrated by: Robert Glenister

Format: audible by Overdrive

Length: 17hrs & 22mins.

Rating: 4/5

OMG enjoyed the heck out of this second book. Still in love with Strike and Robin but have grown to dislike Mathew much more than the first book. I loved how Strike stuck to his guns even if its a chance to ruin a friendship and a lighter paycheck. Also Robin has more backbone then I thought she did. She didn’t bow down to Mathew even though he hated her new job, and Strike has the habits of a grumpy bear. She can handle it as well as this case. This was interesting for the fact that Robin was out in the field more. To see the bad cop and good cop was fun. Can’t wait for Robin to train more to be more involved in other cases.

the case was supposed to be a simply find a missing author Owen Quine however it didn’t turn out to be that simply. Now with the cops looking in the wrong place and only his instinct to guide him. Strike and Robin dig deep into the last book Quine  wrote which shows the uglier side of the people around him.

I love listening to the audio version because I love the voice that Robert Glenister brings to Comoran Strike character. Plus since this book is a bit length and little blah in parts listening to it makes the experience quicker. Plus this book is 17hrs 22 mins long by listening and it was just fun that you forgot the length.

Other than Mathew acting the way he did plus the whole Charlotte thing. I really love how these book was brought together because I can never figure out who what or why. Which makes it a really good mystery to me. Now onto Career of Evil.

Book Review: The Cuckoo’s Calling

AUTHOR: Robert Galbraith

SERIES: Cormoran Strike-1

NARRATED: Robert Glenister

LENGTH: 15h 54m

RATING: 4/5

SUMMARY:

Cormoran Strike just got out of an unstable relationship, sleeping in his office, and is close to losing his job. That was until John Bristow came to him hoping that Strike will find out if his sister actually killed herself. So now with his Temp Robin Ellacott, Strike has to dig into the life of Lula Landry and her fashion lifestyle.

CHARACTERS:

Cormoran Strike isn’t some hot P.I  instead he is described as a heavy set man who lost his leg in the war. Now out Strike uses his mind to solve cases from all kind of clients. The way he writes everything down and jus see things in different way is cool. Strike is  very detailed person and knows how to ask the right question and how to ask them.

I liked Robin Ellacott for the fact though she knows she’s not getting paid what she should, or that her fiancé hates her temp job. She keeps doing it. Not in spite but because she loves to work on cases and help solve it.

Strike and Robin together make a great team. And they make a fun team fort they don’t ask much of each other. Yes there are arguments between the two or they know when the other and don’t want to talk. They respect each other give each other space and work on it out.

THE STORY:
The mystery itself was fun because I kept guessing who it was but was wrong every time. Especially the motive which now that I’ve think about it makes more sense and just loved how this book ended. Plus in was in London, England which is a place I’ve been so I see some of it since Strike walks everywhere.

AUDIO BOOK:

I agree that listening to it is a really good choice because its fun to hear all the voices. Plus I got through this book faster than if I try to read the physical copy. For warn though this is a long book and you will feel it. Yet the steps in finding the answers was a fun time.

DISLIKE:

The one and only problem I had was that there seemed to extra information that dragged the story a bit. I get why most of it was there as backstory and inner thoughts of the characters. On the other hand though it got confusing and took me to remember what am acting hearing.

IN A NUTSHELL:

I loved the friendship between Strike and Robin and think they play off each other great. The mystery of finding the truth about Lula and how her death came to be was just a really good mystery story.  So give it a chance and let me know what you think. And if you have read this book gush to me what you thought. Me I’ll be continuing on with Silkworm now thanks to it being on Overdrive in audio format. 🙂

Book Review: Illuminae

Author: Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Series: the Illuminae Files_01

Genre: Science Fiction w/ mult. media

Format: Hardback/audible

Page Count: 599/ 11hrs & 41mins

Rating: 5/5

Summary: First off we start on the planet Kerenza where the people there gets attacked randomly. Destroying the planet but not ever one including ex’s Kady and Erza. However they get separated and one goes on the Alexandra and the other on Hypatia both heading toward the Heimdall while running from the people who were trying to destroy Kerenza. However it’s not a smooth trip and soon things start to get hushed up so it seems that Kady is the only one who wants to find answers.

My Thoughts:

So much happens and that ending had me preordering the next book which is only two days away. Everyone has pretty much heard/read this book before me since it is a 2015 release and am late as always. But here is my very thoughts though a bit randomly about this book that I don’t read the genre but kind a want to read more.
I didn’t get lost and was happily surprised about where the story took you. That mostly have to do with Kady Grant. She is such a strong character who had a lot and I mean a LOT of things thrown at her yet she took it all with steel. Even if she didn’t really feel it. Her hacking skills and drive to find answers are great traits for a character to have. And Ezra may not be the smartest guy in the world I still loved him and humor. He’s a goof ball that I just wanted to hug and cheer for when he got a achievement.
But they are not the only two weren’t the only reason..

1. there was also the war in the space and how these ships where trying to get to the Heimdall to safety.

2. The whole government are keeping secrets so Kady has to use her hacking skills to find the answers.

3. Long distance relationship taken to another level since its in space and on two different ships.

4. The mystery virus that has to be contained in locked place.

5. And of course when a computer becomes to smart for the peoples own good.

I enjoyed all these points because in my head it can all happen which is scary and a page tuner at the same time. Kaufman and Kristoff didn’t pull any punches and pulled at your heart because you fall in love with all the characters. Well the ones at least that become friends with the two main characters and can make me smile. I love my side characters and these book hurt my heart a lot for what they did.
Plus the audio is really interesting for its done by different voices and just made the storyline run smoothly without me getting confused. Its 11 hrs and 41 mins however since its a mult-media book it was page or two chapters.
the writing is interesting because there is a lot of media’s in the book. Including IM’s, emails, voicemails, drawings, and other things I don’t know the names of. But it was really cool to look at while listening. Also the descriptions especially with AIDAN the way everything was describe I POV made it seem like he was a real person instead of a machine.

this book was beautiful done and so glad I don’t have to wait a whole year before the next book comes out.

So there are the thoughts of one bookworm let me know yours in the comments below. Also if anyone has some good science fiction books that is good for a beginner please let me know in the comments. Thanks for reading and hope to come back soon. 🙂

KINDLE BOOK REVIEW: Caught Up in Us

Author: Lauren Blakely

Series: Caught Up in Love-1

Format: kindle

Page Count:260

Rating: 2 (Okay)

This story was just okay with things I couldn’t get behind. So before the rant start lets get into what this story is about.

We follow Kat and Bryan who were summer time couple until Bryan broke up with her without a reason. So flash forward 5 years later and Kat is attending NYU for business classes to help grow her business for her jewelry line My Favorite Mistakes. Well one requirement for graduation is to have a mentor from a another business show you how the process works, and who does Kat get will her ex Bryan of course.

So Let me just say I didn’t overly liked Kat and Bryan together however I did like them separate. They are both smart and started there businesses from scratch.  Kat didn’t just want to grow her business to be rich but to help her family out on there failing store. Plus Bryan is one of those bosses that know all his employees by name along with there families. So he is not that bad of a guy. My problem was when they were together as a couple instead of a mentor to student. The few side character made up for my dislike for the two main characters.
The business aspect of it as Kat is learning how things are done on a bigger scale was interesting. both make there business with trinkets and recycled stuff. Making old things have a new purpose which I can totally get behind.
The Big rub I had about this book is the relationship. So 5 years ago they had to be in a secret relationship because 1) he was friends with her brother. 2) there is a three years age difference. So they kept in themselves. 5 years later they are back to a secret relationship for 1) the mentor/student thing 2) there is a scandal at Bryans business so he cant risk it. Its a repeat relationship that doesn’t make sense.
Also Kat started fooling around with him before she knew why he broke up with her in the first place. Which I would think that she would want to know before getting involved with him again. Kat was just to quick to me to let go her angry at  him and back into wanting him. The fact that it took him taking off his shirt for her to get back with him just bugs me.

Lastly the whole reason Bryan broke up with her didn’t get mentioned until I got  77%  done. After all the kissing and phone sex they been having before this.  I don’t know if it is my non romantic heart but the whole thing didn’t make sense and backwards.
This was such a downer for I read to other books by this author and really enjoyed them. That doesn’t mean I wont keep reading her books because I will be slowly collecting them. Buy this book was not for me.

BOOK REVIEW: Big Rock

Author: Lauren Blakley

Format: kindle

Page Count: 235

Rating: 5/5

Its officially I really liked this author and will be collecting her books slowly but surly. Onto this first book….
SUMMARY:

Spenser Holiday is the main speaker. Spenser is a ladies man but also a gentlemen who loves his family. Loves them so much in fact that he opened his big mouth and tells a lie that he is engaged to his best friend/ business partner Charlotte. Just so that his dad has the chance at a  business deal to sale his business and retire. It was only supposed to be a week long fake engagement that soon became more.

MY THOUGHTS:

This book as a whole I liked very much and for many reasons. One being Spenser himself. He may have been a ladies man and opened his mouth to lots of lying to his family. However I can’t fault him for doing it. His heart was in the right place and wasn’t just a selfish act for his benefit.
Then we have Charlotte the best friend/business partner who sucks at keeping secrets yet she agrees. Also Charlotte has a problem of her own dealing with a ex boyfriend who is pretty much stalking her. So agreeing to this fake engagement has some benefits other then the sexual ones.
and of boy is there sexy times. It doesn’t come off right away because Spenser doesn’t want to go there however as things heat up they both take what the other can give. Plus being best friends since college has helped make the relationship seem more real. They have great humor along with great chemistry which brings a great read.
Plus the side characters including siblings, best friends, and family members make me smile so much. Another plus being that the end conflict was minor to how some blowouts happen. I was happy that it didn’t follow the usual format that made me love this book more. Last plus there is two more books out on some of the side characters which am more than happy to spend my money on and read them as soon as possible.

Okay done rambling for now other than to say please read and let me know what you think.
