Summary: “I made the wrong choice.”
Lina is spending the summer in Tuscany, but she isn’t in the mood for Italy’s famous sunshine and fairy-tale landscape. She’s only there because it was her mother’s dying wish that she get to know her father. But what kind of father isn’t around for sixteen years? All Lina wants to do is get back home.
But then she is given a journal that her mom had kept when she lived in Italy. Suddenly Lina’s uncovering a magical world of secret romances, art, and hidden bakeries. A world that inspires Lina, along with the ever-so-charming Ren, to follow in her mother’s footsteps and unearth a secret that has been kept for far too long. It’s a secret that will change everything she knew about her mother, her father—and even herself.
People come to Italy for love and gelato, someone tells her, but sometimes they discover much more.
I REALLY WANT TO ITALY!!!! I mean I’ve always wanted to go to Italy because am a pasta lover and so it makes sense to go where it was born right. To see Italy through Lina’s eyes and hearing the stories it felt magically.
Another thing I couldn’t help but love is the characters yes there is some I hated and others I thought may not be as bad as I first thought. However Lin.a, Howard, Ren, and Sonia there is other cool characters like Ren family who are funny, and Ren’s group of friends. These are my favorite though.
Lina is our main character and she come’s to Italy after her mothers death to live her father which she’s never know about. Not only that but she lives in a WW2 cemetery that doesn’t help someone grieving. However finding her mothers journal and learning how she spent her year in Italy helped her.
Howard was one of Lina’s mothers best friend when she came to Italy for college and is Lina’s father. He is such a small town gentleman thanks to his South Carolina roots. He is so understanding about space and enjoys telling stories about history. He also have a sense of humor that I can totally get behind.
Lorenzo or Ren as his friends call him. Ren is the first person to befriend Lina and helps her learn about her mothers past. He is half American and lives in a gingerbread house. Riding around Italy on his little scooter being overly protective of Lina thanks to being afraid of Howard. Just puts a smile on face.
Sonia to be truthful I thought she would be Howards love interest. Instead she’s a friend and there seems to be no love love between them. Which is fine because Lina needed a friend and women influence that Sonia brings to the story.
Loves other than the characters:
This book does a great way of making a person fall in love with Italy by describing the culture/food/and sites that makes people want to go.
The way Ren is afraid of Howard after just one conversation. How Howard kept at it even though he knew Ren was a good guy.
The way Howard and Lina’s relationship was a work in progress.
The fact that there was no easy translation for the Italian words/phases. It would have been nice if there was a back glossary or even a easy translation after it. However most of the time they just go right by it like am supposed to know what there saying. Instead I have to look it up which takes me out of my book for a bit.
Another thing is how predictably it is. The big plot twist wasn’t a surprise for you can guess at it in the beginning. Also about it being a bit predictable is how Lina is pretty much doing what her mother did relationship wise. Which I won’t say because spoilers.
All in all read this book if you want to learn more about Italy and become very hungry with all the food. Also you learn a bit about its history and stories that make you feel like your there listening to them. This is a great summer read that everyone should try.
