REVIEW: A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness

FORMAT: audible/paperback

SERIES: all soul #1

SUMMARY: Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

I picked up these book because I kept hearing good things about it, and so I wanted to give it a try. For a book that’s 579 pages it packed a lot of interest for me.

Loved all the characters. Diane Bishop is such a strong women even if she is trying to forgot her witch heritage. However thanks to Mathew she learns pretty quickly that she cannot hide from herself but embrace it. Edward Clairmont is such a dark character who happens to be a vampire. I loved how both of them have top careers and are smart. though some of that smarts went over my head. History and biology weren’t my strongest subjects in school. Also I loved Diane’s aunts and how there totally opposite from one another. Or Matthews mom who was a total hag to Diane, but ended up calling her daughter. Marcus is a total goofball that is a fine with me.  One character I don’t really get was Miriam she seems to hate Matthews. However she seem to have loyalty to him.
So these book has many themes like:
Mystery: over the Ashmole 782 which started this whole thing. Also we have the mystery over Diane about her witch powers and why she doesn’t do it.
Political: for there is congress for the supernatural that doesn’t like the fact that Matthew and Diane have fallen for each other.
Romance: they had such a up and down roller coaster effect kind of relationship. Which I loved experience.
Danger: Diane and Matthew are being hunted by there own kind and have to pretty much go from location to location to try and hide from them.

So in conclusion I loved this book and will continue on as soon as possible. I just loved how Deborah Harkness didn’t just make this into a love story between a witch and vampire but also added other elements. That kept me interested to get this massive book done in three days. The way it ended and how addicted I am now have me currently listening to the second book Night of Shadows and I can already say that it just keeps getting better.

Thanks for reading this long ramble review and hope that I may peak your interest.

Radreadathon Wrap Up

So I just finished a readathon called radreadathon that was hosted on Instrgram. I did this to help read more since I haven’t finished anything since the first week of May. So to help with that I joined in a read-a- thon and here the details.

Title: #radreadathon

Host by: & @midnightburrito

Dates: May 23-29

1. must complete all challenge.

2. challenges can be combined

3. must read a total of three books.

CHALLENGES: a book w/ more than 500 pages.

2. read a book w/ less then 250 pgs. a book w/ the “Queen” in the title. book by a new author. a purple book.

6.start a series.

7.finish a series.

So how did I do well with combining some of the challenges I read a total of five books. The challenges I combined and the books I read are as following.

A book over 500 pages and with “Queen” in the title.

A book with less then 250 pages. I got two for these one in the same series.

Start a series with purple on the cover and is a new author. Easy

Finish a series.

I also have reviews on all these books just click on the picture and it will take you to the review. Since am  proud of myself for this a snicker pie is in order to celebrate. I went from reading three books in the beginning of the month to finishing up with 8 books.

There is also another read-a-thon that I will be doing in the beginning of June that will hopefully cut me big book TBR.

Is there anymore read-a-thons happening in June? Because I may need another one when I get a bit slump. Please let me know and if you did any read-a-thons this month.

My Current Reads List

Its happened I’ve been having great reading months and now am pretty much at a standstill. I’ve started so many books and tried to continue others but I just cant. Even audible doesn’t help because I can’t concentrate on what’s being sad. So sadly here are six books that am currently trying to read.

Destined for Doon by Carey Corp 13%

I have just got back on Net galley to see if I can get the hang of it. And I was lucky enough to get a advance copy of the last book Forever Doon. However I can’t read it until I get through both Destined and Shades of Doon. The thing is the relationships in these books take my feeling and pretty much break me. So I have to read this by sections and take breaks.

The Program by Suzanne Young 25%

The first 25% of this book broke my heart. So I haven’t really picked it up since then. Suzanne Young brought the heartbreak fast because even though your just getting to know the character something happened that broke everything.

The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson 20%

I need to get the books I’ve been needing to read especially before the series end. However am so in a don’t know what to read mood that I’ve only read little of this book. I’ve read up to she meeting the boys and me trying to figure out whos who. Which is a great thing to stress over

Emerald Green by Kerstin Gier 48%

I finished the first two really quickly and yet I stopped almost halfway with this one. I don’t know if its because I don’t want it to end or just burned out. Another ball however Gwen is trying to keep the drinking to small amount.

A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas 11%

I need to read more Sarah J. Maas and heard good things about this book but it was a start then stop type of night. Feyre is taken prisoner and trying to avoided eating and drinking while planning an escape.

The Wrath & The Dawn by Renne Ahdieh

The same with Kiss of Deception. I thought I would get to this faster since there is only two books, but apparently that’s not the case. Am only where she is walking to her wedding. So only a few pages so am no where in the book. Which is why there is no progress on goodreads.

And that’s probably not all of folks. This weekend I’ll either get through these are start something new. I don’t like not knowing what I want to read I have so many books in many formats and am stuck. Wish me luck on untangling.

Review: Sapphire Blue

Author: Kerstin Gier

Series: Precious Stone Trilogy-2
Format: audible
Publisher: Henry Holt

Rating: 4/5

Summary: Gwen’s life has been a rollercoaster since she discovered she was the Ruby, the final member of the secret time-traveling Circle of Twelve. In between searching through history for the other time-travelers and asking for a bit of their blood (gross!), she’s been trying to figure out what all the mysteries and prophecies surrounding the Circle really mean.

At least Gwen has plenty of help. Her best friend Lesley follows every lead diligently on the Internet. James the ghost teaches Gwen how to fit in at an eighteenth century party. And Xemerius, the gargoyle demon. And of course there is Gideon, the Diamond. Gwen’s not sure what’s going on, but she’s pretty much destined to find out.

My thoughts: So because it’s the second book am going to be short and only say so key things that I remember when reading. So the second book is pretty much finding out as much as Gwen can without being caught. And drama that lead into the last book.

Something funny is that Gwen gets drunk, and we have a new friend introduced in the beginning of the book. The thing about the friend is he’s a creature that no one else can see and follows Gwen everywhere. Oh spits out water when excited.

Gwen takes to meeting an old family member in the past and getting his help with finding answers.

Gideon has a back and forth hate to make out mood going on. Plus at the end something big happens between Gideon and Gwen. Then Gwen is told something that makes her mistrust Gideon that leads into the next book. (His problem is we don’t who’s side he is actual on).

While Charlotte had gotten over not talking to Gwen to now being her trainer. Which she takes to being a snob once again. She loves to show how much she knows and rub in Gwen’s face.

Charlotte goes a little mad when she is left out of the big secret that Gwen is keeping. So she tries to rat her out as much as possible. And

Gwen knows people who should trust her don’t and so she does things her own way. So with her trusted team she finds out as much as she can even if it’s dangerous if anyone finds out.

And of course we had the quick ending with an interesting epilogue. Now on to the third and final book because how quick these books go I really want to know the end game.

April Bookhaul

First off my two preorders:

Then I went on a Richelle Mead buying spree:

Spirit Bound and Indigo Spell I got on Amazon. The others are from Book Outlet.

Plus three more from one of my favorite book sites Book Outlet.

Then the kindle books:

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

So the stats are:

28- audible books (listened to 17 of those)

44- ebooks

Bringing my total for the month 83 books in different formats. I need to get on top of these because my ebook and audible collections are getting out of control.

Mid- April Wrap Up

I don’t know how but I have read so far this month 13 books. So am doing a mid April wrap along with short reviews on each. Didn’t even realize I listened to so much but am excited to see how the rest works out for me.

Delusion in Death by J.D. Robb (5/5)

in death #35

New Yorkers never knew what hit them when one minute there hanging out at there favorite diner then a killing spree the next. And to them its the images of there worse nightmares instead of friends or family.

Calculated in Death by J.D. Rob (5/5)

in death #36

An accountant that gets killed for no reason other than doing her job and covering for friends. Which leads to a domino effect means cleanup time for those involved and Eve to be quick to find it. FLYING TOODLERS.

Thankless in Death by J.D. Robb (5/5)

in death #37

A boy that doesn’t want to grow up or be told what to do goes on a killing spree before Thanksgiving. The more he kills the more he gets into it, all while collecting there money and having tons of good luck. Plus the favorite family from Ireland come to visit.

Concealed in Death by J.D. Robb (5/5)

in death #38

Inside an old building live the remains of 12 young girls that have been there for 15 years. And was found thanks to Roarke  having to buy everything. So he of course calls up his wife and a new old case. This was hard since they had to look to the bones to find each girl who some had good to not good lives before. We also meet a new bone scientist who Eve doesn’t full trust, and butt heads on more than one occasion.

Festive in Death by J.D. Robb (5/5)

in death #39

Its Christmas and someone didn’t want womanizer personal trainer to have a joyful holiday. So while finishing up her Christmas shopping, planning a party and going through cheating spouses. A typically Christmas season for Eve Dallas. This was more a character love. For Eve had to make a deal with Summerset which we may never see again. Party time and gift giving plus the pink continues.

Obsession in Death by J.D. Robb (5/5)

in death #40

Eve has a stalker and is killing those who every gave her problems before, and leaving messages at the crimes saying her true friend. Now Eve has to go through old stalkers and pin this person done before they hurt someone she loves. Am surprised we haven’t had more stalker books. I mean we had the one where its killers from her past or killers asking her to catch them. But a fan from her work is a new one especially how far she went with it. Lets just say that’s one way to start to the New Year.

Devoted in Death by J.D. Robb (5/5)

in death #41

This is a total Bonny and Clyde twist because instead robbing these two like to kill. So while driving to New York they have a pile of bodies left on the trip. Haven’t been caught however there in New York and now have to deal with Eve Dallas. This was a lot of back tracking since they have to follow there path to New York to find who these people are. We meet a new character who came to help out with the case and it was fun to watch the country boy coming to the big city.

Brotherhood in Death by J.D. Robb (5/5)

in death #42

College friends who is having karma coming back as there being picked off one by one. This one was hard for not only one of my favorite characters gets hurts. However the killers are mostly the victims and just trying to find peace with the past.

Wallbanger by Alice Clayton (5/5)

cocktail #1

Moving into a new apartment and the last thing  Caroline expected was to be kept awake from wild sex at the apartment next door. And when she meets Simon at a mutal friends party they come up with a deal so that she can sleep. Which turns into a friendship to a little more. This book took me by surprise in the  way that I highly enjoyed this book since I thought it would be more sexy times. However between the friendship to the double meaning to every converstation they had. And that doesn’t even beginning with them trying to get the right friends together and Clive. Clive the cat has so much personality, and gosh I loved how him and Simon bounded.

Rusty Nailed by Alice Clayton (5/5)

Cocktail #2

Book two of the Wallbanger series. Simon and Caroline coming into there relationship a bit more and learning about each other and being together. It was a little more drama in these book from buying a house to going to the past. Plus being brought into their friends relationship troubles which ends up boys against girls. Still love this book and the couples even though I think a lot could be explained if talking out loud instead of in your head was a thing.

Last Call by Alice Clayton  (5/5)

cocktail #4.5

I don’t know what to say about this without spoilers so all I’ll say is Simon gets hurt out of the country. Which makes Caroline  fly out to him and something really sweet moments in between. This is a novella which is why its so short.

Beautiful Bastard by Christina Lauren (3/5)

beautiful bastard #1

The sexy times I excepted in Wallbanger made up in these book. It had a weird how fast they went into sex when a moment before they were talking about how much they didn’t like each other. Plus the point of views got confusing since I listened to this and there was just one person doing both Bennett and Chloe. The parts I really enjoyed was Bennett’s family they were so nice and family related.

Beautiful Bitch by Christina Lauren (3.5/5)

beautiful bastard #1.5

Bennett and Chloe are moving to New York for a new branch so before that they wanted to take a vacation. Thanks to some flashbacks we learn pretty fast that they have the worse luck with them and this one is the same. However in the end we get a sweet moment which give it a bump to 3.5.

Am totally  on a contemporary thing and my audible have plenty to keep me enterained while getting through them pretty quick. So hopefully my reading keep going good and not slow down or stop all together.

Top Ten Tueday

TOPIC: Ten Books Every Non Instant Love Fans Should Read:

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowel

I love this book for the fact that Levi and Cath are both goofy people and made for each other. Though that road to that conclusion was long and bumpy.

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

Valek is pretty much the main reason to read this book. He’s pretty much a jack of all trades and handsome as hell to boot. Which is probably why Yelena (and me of course) fell for him.

Incarnate by Jodi Meadows

I want a Sam for he plays music, a great listener, and understanding. Which is all Ana needed after living the way she did before coming to Heart and meeting him. Plus no love triangle which is rare in young adult.

Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

I laugh every time I think of Tucker and Clara. How they went from some what rivals since there first meet wasn’t the best. To becoming a couple and being really romantic with each other. I don’t know why but they are one of my top couples in my head.

The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski

Arin and Kestrel have a complicated relationship status. Which is probably why I root for them so much to get together in the end. Politics and war be damned.

Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers

All the books in the His Fair Assassin trilogy have those slow burning love. It helps with the fact that politics, war, and past memories for the girls keep the romances on the back burner.

Legend by Marie Lu

I love Days and Junes relationship in these book. For one hated while the other wasn’t complete sure. Then they cam together thanks to a common goal and fell for each other.

Sea of Shadows by Kelley Armstrong

Love how these story has one story but pretty much told in two sister point of views. Along with that is two different romances that seem to go different ways to. I simply love Moria and Gavril for the banter and just them makes me love reading about them.

Defiance by C.J. Redwine

This is more of a search for father than a romantic story which is always okay in my book. Rachel the hardheaded red head and Logan the mechanic who try to keep his distance. Plus dealing with the deadly things in the Wasteland sounds like a good start to a romance to me.

Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson

Not many people like how the relationship happen but I did. I loved how it was total friends zone to in a relationship. All the sweet moments just adds up to me a really good start to finish for there relationship.

I love how the romances are built up like good solids one should. I know am not the only one that rolls there eyes at the how predictability, and instant some relationships in books appear. So am always happy and love the book more when there is more a build up then the boom.

Weekend Goals Actived

I got through all three books that I wanted to read and I only have one more book to get be caught up with the in death series. Goals in the making. Now that I’ve pretty much caught up its time to get through other series and books. Now I don’t have the terrible need to read the in death series all the time.

So after Brotherhood in Death will be waiting until September for the newest one. I’ll miss the characters which is the main reason for anyone to read these books but it is time for a little break.

I also discovered that reading physical books right now don’t help me. So audible books have saved my reading life from coming nonexistent. I have found more ways to listen to books then actual read them especially at work and late night when everyone else is asleep. It’s just easier to plug in my headphones and listen to the narrators.

So my weekend was a success and hopefully I can keep it going for the rest of the year.

Hope everyone has a good week 😊

End of March TBR

My top three books am going to be reading for the rest of March. Am going to finish off three series even if it takes me a bit. Am excited for this goal and hope and I can stick to it.

These are the last book in trilogies that’s I’ve been holding off on for to long. Infinite first, then Boundless, and lastly Finale.

Another Book Birthday

Series: Ravenspire #1

Another Snow White retelling where I’ve read a couple of pages and already don’t like the stepmother. She has the ambition of Lavanna from the The Lunar Chronicles. So if am right about this then I can’t wait to read more of these.
